Get to know the destination

Rwanda’s Big Five safari destination.

Akagera is home to lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros—the Big Five. Its landscapes bring together savannah, woodland, wetlands and lakes. There is more to enjoy than a checklist: leave time to watch, listen and take in the surroundings.

Animals move freely. Sightings, including seeing every member of the Big Five, are never guaranteed. Photographs are safari inspiration, not a promise of a particular encounter.

Start with an idea · Make it yours

Choose your pace, then shape your safari.

These sample itineraries are starting points, rather than fixed packages. We confirm the route, pickup time, activities and total price before you book.

1 day · A full day out

Akagera day safari from Kigali

An early pickup, travel to the park and a game drive, followed by the return to Kigali. Discuss meal stops and the time available for wildlife viewing when planning.

A good option when your schedule is short and you are comfortable with a long day on the road. A boat trip is only added if the route and confirmed departure allow it.

2 days · More time to explore

Overnight Akagera safari

Day one: travel from Kigali, enjoy a planned game drive and settle into your confirmed accommodation. Ask about adding a Lake Ihema boat excursion.

Day two: further game viewing on the agreed route, then return to Kigali. Accommodation, meals and activity reservations depend on availability and your quotation.

Game viewing, lake scenery & time outdoors.

Explore by vehicle

Game drives

Plan wildlife viewing through the park’s varied landscapes. Your quotation will specify the vehicle and guiding arrangements, with the route adapted to access, conditions and available time.

Optional addition

Lake Ihema boat excursion

See the lake environment from the water and look out for hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds. Boat places, departures and fees are confirmed separately before including this activity.

A personal focus

Birdwatching & photography

Tell us if birds, landscapes or photography are central to your trip. We can discuss a suitable pace and guiding requirements rather than trying to fit every activity into one day.

Know what you are booking

A clear quotation before you commit.

What determines the safari price?

Your dates, number of travellers, trip length, transport, guiding and selected activities shape the quotation. Park fees can depend on visitor category; we will ask for the details needed to check the applicable rate.

For overnight trips, accommodation choice and availability also affect the total. We do not publish a single price that could leave you guessing about extras.

What your quotation should confirm

  • Pickup and drop-off locations, dates and planned route.
  • Vehicle arrangement, passenger capacity, luggage space and guiding.
  • Park entry and vehicle fees, meals and drinking water where included.
  • Any boat excursion, accommodation and other optional additions.
  • Total price, exclusions, payment schedule and cancellation terms.

What to bring

Bring the identification agreed for park entry, comfortable clothing, sun protection and a light layer. A camera, binoculars and a charged phone can be useful; protect equipment from dust and rain.

Travel with care

Follow park staff and guide instructions, keep a respectful distance from wildlife and leave no litter. Tell us about children’s ages, mobility needs or other requirements before we plan activities and transport.

Booking & payment

Send your enquiry, review the written quotation and agree the terms before payment. An enquiry does not reserve an activity or confirm a booking.

Before you enquire

Akagera safari questions.

Can I visit Akagera in one day from Kigali?

We can plan a day safari with an early departure and return to Kigali. It is a long day; an overnight option gives the itinerary more flexibility. The final schedule depends on your pickup point and planned route.

Will I see all of the Big Five?

Akagera is home to the Big Five, but sightings depend on wildlife movement and conditions. No safari can guarantee seeing all five animals.

Are the boat trip and park fees included?

Only items specifically listed as included in your quotation are included. We confirm park fees, guiding, meals, accommodation and optional activities before booking.

Can you arrange a family or group trip?

Yes, we welcome private and organised group enquiries. Share everyone’s ages where relevant, group size, luggage and any access requirements so we can discuss suitable arrangements.
